What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation is an assessment of your brain's ability to think, communicate, remember, focus and problem solve. Unlike neuroradiological studies such as CT scans and MRI scans, a neuropsychological evaluation looks at the function of your brain. The testing assesses your ability as it relates to others who are similar to you (age and education level), as well as comparing your own abilities with one another.

Neuropsychological testing incorporates a wide range of tasks. Some questions evaluate your ability to listen, attend and focus. Other tests ask you to remember and recall information. Some assessments look at problem solving and how you work through things you have not seen before. Neuropsychological testing also involves your mood and personality. Looking at these issues is very important to understanding the whole person, which is my goal when providing you with an assessment.

Depending upon your age, reason for referral, and other factors, your testing may last anywhere from 90 minutes to most of the day. My office manager will give you an estimate of how long to expect when setting up your appointment. If possible, please don't schedule appointments immediately after your testing appointment in case the session goes overtime. Please bring your glasses, any necessary medications, and/or snacks if you need them. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
